Visual Arts

Primary

Our Primary School students work with arts specialists to explore a wide range of mediums including painting, collage, printmaking, ceramics and textiles. We seek to encourage every child to express their creativity through our facilitated approach. There are regular opportunities to work with Artist in Residence to expand artistic experiences. We have a bi-annual arts exhibition where student artwork is displayed.

Secondary

All students are encouraged to develop skills in a range of mediums whilst also exploring concepts. There is the opportunity to focus more deeply in areas such as ceramics, painting & drawing, textiles and graphic illustration. There is also an extra-curricular offering in Ceramics Club where the pottery wheels produce many beautiful objects both sculptural and functional.

In senior years, students are offered a more ‘art studio’ experience, having their own desks and art space to really take ownership of their artistic pursuits. There are two art camps, one focused on visiting key cultural arts venues in Perth and Fremantle, the other at the Red Moort Reserve in Boxwood Hill where there is the opportunity to really focus on a creative piece in an authentic manner. We also offer an Arts Cultural Tour to Paris.

Student work is exhibited both at school in our annual senior school exhibition and art competitions, both state and local, including the Shaun Tan Art Award and St George's Cathedral Art Award. Student artwork from our exhibitions was showcased at the Albany Town Hall and will be showcased in 2026 at the Vancouver Arts Centre.

Great Southern Grammar acknowledges that the land upon which we learn, play and grow is Menang land, whose traditional custodians are the Noongar people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that their sovereignty was never ceded.
