Camps

Camps and expeditions are an integral part of learning at GSG

From our Wild Space walks in Kindy all the way through to adventures on camps and sailing down the West Australian coast on the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure, our experiential learning programmes help your child develop and understand their sense of self and build and manage healthy, respectful relationships.

Our campers start young and camps are carefully crafted to safely challenge your child at each stage of their development with increasing opportunities, over time, to explore their self-reliance, interdependence and leadership. Our camps and expeditions encourage the development of an adventurous spirit whilst managing personal risks, building independence and resilience. Your child will make memories that they will carry with them into a bright future.

Primary School Camp Programme

Our Primary School camp programme is designed to foster courage, build resilience and confidence, nurture respect and compassion through teamwork, shared experiences and community-building activities. Our students develop a love of learning through authentic experiences that grow with them. The progression of camps encourages personal growth, independence and confidence, helping students discover their place in the world and directly supporting our school's mission to help students create their impact.

It begins in Year Three with a resilience-building walk at Castle Rock, followed by a school sleepover, an exciting first step toward independence.

Year Three Camp

Year Four takes students to Camp Quaranup for two history-rich days filled with the perfect balance of adventure and curriculum-aligned learning, forming connections between the classroom and the real world.

Year Four Camp

In Year Five, the journey expands to a three-day camp in Perth, where visits to Parliament House and Fremantle Prison bring Western Australia’s history to life and deepen understanding of the Humanities curriculum. This is combined with plenty of camp activities, team building and fun!

Year Five Camp

Finally, Year Six marks a milestone, four unforgettable nights on Rottnest Island where lasting friendships are forged, teamwork is strengthened and the end of Primary School is celebrated in true island style. Each camp builds confidence, connection, and curiosity, core values that carry our students into their Secondary years.

Our camp programme is an example of our outdoor classroom experience and is a space for character development and service. The camp programme exemplifies this through immersive, hands-on experiences that build problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Secondary School Camps and Expeditions

The Secondary School Camps and Outdoor Expedition programme at Great Southern Grammar is a vital element of the curriculum and provides learning experiences beyond the classroom for students to discover their abilities and explore ways to develop them.

All students take part in a sequential programme from Years Seven to Ten. Each camp has a specific personal development focus and graduated level of physical, mental and social challenge set to develop the qualities of resilience, self-reliance, self-discovery, leadership, service and teamwork.

YEAR SEven

In Year Seven, students venture to Jarrahfall Bush Camp for adventures.

YEAR EIGHT

The fun continues in Year Eight at the Camp Quaranup, with Service Learning, sport and adventure.

YEAR NINE

Setting out to Adventure Works. Choosing a canoeing expedition on the Blackwood River or an iconic journey on the Leeuwin.

Our school camps are held in diverse outdoor settings, where students embark on expeditions and take part in exciting, adventurous activities that foster resilience, teamwork and other lifelong skills.

Providing Students with Opportunities

Students participate in expeditions and adventurous activities, providing students with opportunities to:

  • Develop an appreciation of Australia’s varied natural environments.
  • Develop environmentally sensitive camping and expedition skills.
  • Extend their learning environment beyond the classroom.
  • Experience personal challenge and growth; and
  • Develop a greater understanding of interdependence with others.

Communication

  • Students learn to express ideas clearly, listen actively and collaborate effectively in team settings.
  • Activities like group navigation and camp planning require clear communication.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Outdoor challenges (hiking, canoeing, orienteering) demand cooperation, shared decision-making and mutual support.
  • Builds trust and respect among peers.

Great Southern Grammar acknowledges that the land upon which we learn, play and grow is Menang land, whose traditional custodians are the Noongar people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that their sovereignty was never ceded.
